Image: Marian Brennan's scratchboarding technique is stunningly detailed.
Scratchboarding’ uses a variety of tools to scratch the black ink covering from a white clay background. Ink can be applied to add pops of colour. The work is extremely detailed, requiring many 'layers' of scratching, and can take up to 100 hours to complete one piece.
Scratchboard artist Marian Brennan is an established exhibitor now based in Waikanae and new to the Trail. Early in her art career she specialised in oils and pastels, but now works mostly in this emerging and growing medium.
She says her inspiration comes from people, nature, and wildlife, including from her native South Africa and her decades-long home in Aotearoa New Zealand.
